DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Homeobox protein NOBOX; AltName: Full=Homeodomain-containing protein OG-2; AltName: Full=Newborn ovary homeobox protein; AltName: Full=Oocyte-specific homeobox protein;
FUNCTION: Transcription factor which plays an essential role in postnatal follicle development. Binds preferentially to the DNA sequences 5'-TAATTG-3', 5'-TAGTTG-3' and 5'-TAATTA-3'. Directly regulates the transcription of POU5F1 aand GDF9 during early folliculogenesis.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Specifically expressed in ovaries and testes. In ovaries, expressed in oocytes from primordial through antral follicles but not in granulosa cells, theca cells and corpora lutea.
DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: Expressed from E15.5.
DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Male mice are fertile and show no obvious abnormality. Female mice lacking Nobox have normal gross anatomy and histology, but are infertile with atrophic ovaries that lack oocytes at 6 weeks of age.
SIMILARITY: Contains 1 homeobox DNA-binding domain.
